VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

WORK WITH US ON THE BEACH

This is the best way to get involved.  As the seasons change, the emphasis shifts. We may be planting, weeding, mulching, or gathering or sowing seeds. Come join us!

We typically work at the bird sanctuary during spring, summer, and fall on:

  • Wednesday afternoons from 3:00 to 5:00 and
  • even-numbered Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 11:00

The last regular workday for Fall 2024 was Wednesday, October 23. Workdays will begin again (weather permitting) on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

For more information, or to let us know about your interest, use the Contact Us form at the bottom of our homepage.

Workdays may be cancelled in case of inclement weather and for other reasons.  Additional workdays may be scheduled for special tasks or to accommodate groups volunteering at our site.

HELP US CARE FOR OUR NEW PLANTS

Watering our new seedlings on the beach has been called a Zen-like experience.  This is critical during the hot summer months.  Early mornings or late afternoons are best.  We are fortunate that the City of Evanston provides water.  You can help us get the water to our plants. If you wish to help water plants during the dry summer months, contact Chris Steel (csteelh@comcast.net).

BE A BIRD MONITOR

We need volunteers to conduct bird monitoring, an essential part of caring for the sanctuary.  Gathering and reporting accurate data is critical in assessing our effectiveness.  We welcome participation in our official monitoring group early in the morning during migration.  (Contact Nancy Pinchar, nlpinchar@gmail.com.)  You can help any time of day by spotting birds from just outside the fence. Please post your sightings on eBird - https://ebird.org/hotspot/L3615041
